(Nonius Datus, 152 A.D., was the Roman engineer responsible for the design and construction of a water supply tunnel through the mountain in what is now Algeria. Upon visiting the construction site he learned that the two segments of a tunnel being excavated from both ends were out of alignment and had passed each other! (de Camp 1963))
